Each of your donations will contribute to fulfilling the Nan Lin Graduate Student Paper Award Fund’s mission. Thank you for your consideration and generous support!
Dear Friends,
We are writing to encourage you to contribute to the ICSA Nan Lin Graduate Student Paper Award Fund in the honor of Dr. Nan Lin. The fund will be used to reward young scholars engaging in innovative research on Chinese societies. Our fundraising target is $20,000.
Dr. Nan Lin is Oscar L. Tang Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Duke University. As a world-renowned and highly respected sociologist, he has published substantive seminal work and mentored multiple generations of scholars in and beyond the research field of Chinese societies for about five decades. He especially played a vital role in the rebirth of sociology in China in the late 1970s, and has made significant contributions to the development of sociology in the Greater China region.
Dr. Nan Lin is also the founder and the inaugural President of the North American Chinese Sociologists Association (NACSA) from 1981 to 1990, which was renamed as the International Chinese Sociological Association (ICSA) in spring 2018. The Board of ICSA unanimously approved to rename the “Graduate Student Paper Award” as the “Nan Lin Graduate Student Paper Award” in spring 2018. The rationale for this change is to recognize Nan’s pioneer and significant contributions to the association and to the research area on Chinese societies, and to inspire the research endeavors of future generations of young scholars working on Chinese societies.
Annually the ICSA Graduate Student Paper Award Committee selects one graduate student paper and announces the award at the dinner of the ICSA annual conference. The ICSA Nan Lin Graduate Student Paper Award Fund will be used to recognize and reward emerging young scholars in the study of Chinese societies through a cash prize of 500 USD. ICSA will use the fund as the principal to yield bank interests to pay for the cash prize.
To reach the fundraising goal in Dr. Nan Lin's honor, we are writing to his colleagues, collaborators, students, postdocs, and friends to make the push. Nan has been a colleague, mentor and friend to many of us throughout our careers. He has befriended and adopted us into his intellectual family. We know that you have many opportunities to make worthy charitable donations. We hope that you will consider supporting the ICSA community in honoring Nan’s contributions. You do not need to be an ICSA member in order to make a donation. We will gladly publish the names of contributors on the ICSA website.
Dear ICSA Friends and Colleagues,
We are writing to encourage you to contribute to a new fundraising program, unanimously approved by the Board of the International Chinese Sociological Association (ICSA), in honor of Dr. Yu Xie. The fund (entitled “The Yu Xie Early Career Award Fund”) will be used to reward young scholars engaging in innovative research on Chinese societies. Our fundraising target is $25,000.
Dr. Yu Xie is Bert G. Kerstetter ’66 University Professor of Sociology and PIIRS at Princeton University. As a world-renowned and highly respected sociologist/social scientist, his work has made important contributions to the fields of social stratification, demography, statistical methods, sociology of science, and Chinese studies. He is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Academia Sinica, and the National Academy of Sciences, and he is also the Founding Director of the Paul and Marcia Wythes Center on Contemporary China at Princeton University. The Center sponsored the inaugural conference of the ICSA in 2018.
Dr. Xie has been very active in promoting empirical social science research in China. He has been the Visiting Chair Professor at Peking University (PKU) since 2011, where he has directed the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), the largest national longitudinal social science data collection project in the country, and he founded the Center for Social Research at PKU. He has also been active at several other institutions in the Greater China Region, holding honorary adjunct professorships at Renmin University of China, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Shanghai University, and mentoring dozens of graduate students and post-doctoral scholars.
The ICSA Board has decided to name the Early Career Award after Dr. Yu Xie to recognize his pioneering contributions to scientific research on Chinese societies, his significant contributions to the Association, and his mentorship of and inspiration to future generations of scholars of China.
The Yu Xie Early Career Award will be given annually or biennially to recognize a junior scholar (within 6 years of the PhD) who has made important contributions to the sociological study of China. Nominees must hold ICSA membership or join ICSA before the award is given. Self-nominations to the committee will be also considered. Unawarded nominations will be automatically reconsidered for a period of three years. The award recipient will be announced during the ICSA annual conference and will receive a plaque and a cash prize of US $600. The cash prize will be drawn from the bank interests of the Fund.
